Abstract

An experiment was conducted at Seed Technology Laboratory, CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur during 2013-14 to study the effect of seed coating with polymer, fungicides and insectiside on seed quality of soybean var. Harasoya. The seeds were coated with polymer, fungicides, insecticide, polymer-fungicides and polymer insectiside combinations and stored in polythene bag for 12 months. Irrepective of seed coating with synthetic polymer and additives, seed deteriorated and the vigour declined with increased fungal infection and insect infestation after twelve months of storage seeds. Seed coated with polymer @ 3.0 ml per kg of seed and flowable thiram @ 2.4 ml per kg of seed (T₃) maintained the highest soybean seed germination (84.00%), seedling length (28.80cm), field emergence (76.5%), seedling dry weight (0.435g) and seedling vigour index (2419) upto 12 months over the untreated control (T₀). Seed coated with polymer @ 3.0 ml per kg of seed and imidacloprid @ 6 ml per kg of seed (T₇) recorded lowest insect infestation (0.50%) and seed coated with polymer @ 3.0 ml per kg of seed and flowable thiram @ 2.4 ml per kg of seed (T₃) exhibited lowest seed infection (1.25%) as compared to untreated control (T₀at) the end of 12 months of storage.

Abstract

Field experiment was conducted to study the effect of different seed priming treatments on yield and yield components of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under irrigated and rainfed conditions with cv. HPW 236 at CSKHPKV, Palampur, India during 2014-15. The experimental design was randomized complete block design (factorial) with four replications each under irrigated and rainfed situations. The first factor was situation i.e. irrigated and rainfed situation and the second factor was priming treatments viz., unprimed seed (control), tap water, KNO₃(2.5%), KCl (2.0%) and KH₂PO₄(1.0%). Results showed that situation and priming treatments significantly reduced the days to 75 per cent field emergence, days to 75 per cent flowering, days to maturity, increased the plant height (cm), leaf area (cm²), spike length, number of tillers per plant, number of spikes per plant, number of spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight, seed recovery percentage, straw yield and seed yield. Results of the experiment showed that seed priming with KNO (2.5 %) and water for 16 hours 3 significantly increased seed germination, seed yield and yield components of wheat under both irrigated and rainfed situations.

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at Palampur during kharif 2015 to study the effect of different seed coating treatments on seed yield and related parameters in quality protein maize hybrid HQPM 1. The seeds were coated with polymer, fungicides, insecticide, polymer-fungicides and polymer-insecticide combinations. Seed coating had significant effect on days to 50% tasseUng, days to 50 % silking, days to 75 % maturity, plant height (cm), cobs per plant, cob length (cm), cob girth (cm), number of rows per cob, number of seeds per row, seeds per cob, 100-seed weight (g) and seed yield (q/ ha). Seed coating with polymer+ vitavax 200* @ 2 g/kg of seed and vitavax 200* @ 2 g/kg of seed recorded significantly higher seed yield (q/ha), plant height (cm), cobs per plant, cob length (cm), cob girth (cm), number of rows per cob, number of seeds per row, seeds per cob and 100-seed weight (g) in comparison to the untreated control.

Abstract

Freshly harvested rice seeds (var. HPR 1068) were given nine coating treatments viz. polymer coating, flowable thiram, polymer + flowable thiram, vitavax 200, polymer + vitavax 200, imidacloprid, polymer + imidacloprid, polymer + flowable thiram + imidacloprid, polymer + vitavax 200 + imidacloprid and used along with control to study the effect of seed coating on seed quality and storability in HPR 1068 variety of rice at Seed Technology Laboratory, CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur during 2015-16. The coated seeds were shade dried and stored in HDPE (high density polyethylene) inter woven non-laminated bags for 12 months. Irrespective of seed coating treatments, seed deteriorated and the vigour declined with increased fungal infection after twelve months of seed storage. Seed coated with polymer @ 3 ml per kg of seed and vitavax 200 @ 2 g per kg of seed (T₅) recorded the highest germination percentage (85.66 %), rate of germination (13.86), seedling length (14.30 cm), seedling dry weight (0.062 g) over the untreated control (T_o) and lowest electrical conductivity (0.223 m mho/cm/g) and seed infection (3.16 %) at the end of 12 months of storage. There was no insect infestation found during the storage period.

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at Experimental Farm of Seed Science and Technology, CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur during Kharif 2014 to study the effect of seed coating with synthetic polymer and additives on growth parameters and seed yield of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill.] cv. Hara soya. The seeds were coated with 7 different treatments of polymer, fungicides, insecticide, polymer-fungicides and polymer-insecticide combinations. Seed coating exhibited significant effect on plant height (cm), branches per plant, pods per plant, empty pods per plant, pod length (cm), seeds per pod, 100-seed weight, seeds per plant and seed yield (q/ha). Amongst various coating treatments, seed coated with polymer @ 3.0 ml per kg of seed and flowable thiram @ 2.4 ml per kg of seed (T₃) recorded highest pods per plant (71), pod length (4.30 cm), seeds per plant (162), 100-seed weight (18.40) and seed yield (25 q/ha) as compared to untreated control (T_o).

Abstract

The effect of different seed coating treatments, comprising polymer, fungicide, insecticide, polymer-fungicide and polymer-insecticide combinations was studied on the longevity and seed quality parameters of okra during a twelve month storage period (January 2018 to December 2018). The experimental material consisted of carry over okra seeds (variety P-8) from the Kharif season 2015. The seeds were coated during December 2016 and stored for 24 months, however, here only the findings from 13^th to 24^th month are presented. At the end of storage period (24 months), recorded data revealed that irrespective of seed coating, seed deteriorated due to decline in vigour probably because increased fungal infection and aging of seed. However, two treatments viz., T₆ -polymer + vitavax 200 @ 2 g/kg of seed and T - polymer + flowable thiram @ 2.4 ml/kg of seed were found 4 significantly superior for all seed quality parameters viz., germination (%) - first count (%), final count (%), speed of germination, seedling length (cm), seedling dry weight (g), seedling vigour index-I, seedling vigour index -II, electrical conductivity (m mho/cm/g) and field emergence (%) over T₁ - untreated control at the end of storage period. Hence, these treatments offer an effective alternative means to secure safe seed storage.

Abstract

Characterization plays a significant role in plant science. It enables easy discrimination between varieties and helps in defining a variety. In this study, seven released and/in release pipeline soybean varieties of Himachal Pradesh were morphologically characterised using DUS descriptors. Each variety was tagged to the set of morphological characteristics. Further, the characterization revealed that 11 characters out of 21 namely seed shape, seed colour, seed cotyledon colour, seed hilum colour, seed size, plant growth habit, leaf shape, leaf colour, flower colour, pod pubescence colour and pod colour were very informative in providing a sound identification of seven soybean varieties of Himachal Pradesh. The information generated could be a ready reckoner for all the actors involved in undertaking activities related to maintenance breeding during seed multiplication and for genetic purity assessment using the Grow Out Test.
